About our centre

Lavington Kumon was started in 2000. Our students range from 4 to 15 years old. The Centre is located at the Nairobi International Junior School along James Gichuru Road in Lavington.  It is a conducive learning environment with a very secure parking.  It is a friendly and welcoming atmosphere with a play ground which is very well used by the children after they finish their work for the day.

We use two classrooms for our Kumon lessons.  One is for the children that have been with us for some time and understand the principles of Kumon study.  They have achieved some level of independence and do not require a lot of assistance.

In the second classroom we keep the newly enrolled students who are very dependent on the assistants.  We work with them closely and build up their confidence gradually.  We keep the younger children here for much longer.

We have four friendly and well qualified assistants. The team comprises of University graduates. They are the strength of the Centre as they develop a close relationship with their students.  They provide support and encouragement as the children gradually become independent learners.  Students get upset if their assistant is away for any reason.  Our main goal is to make the learning as effective as possible, and develop a strong discipline that will serve them through their learning years and later. The Assistants goal set and plan work with the student as they agree on the quality of work that has been done on the relevant week.  The Assistants have a close relationship with the children and are often called in to join my meetings with the parents to discuss progress, strengths and weaknesses.

We enroll a large number of students who are struggling with Maths and English in school.  This requires a lot of confidence building and patience as we slowly work through the early work sheets.  We are constantly telling them “slow is fast”.   We also have a fair number of children who are comfortable in school, but the parents feel the “extra help” will be of great value as they progress in School.  Kumon is a unique program that works at the pace of the child, therefore, we are able to work with children of all abilities.

Kumon has provided a unique method for children to excel and fulfil their dreams as they endeavour to reach their full potential.

Upasna Ahmed

About your Instructor

My name is Upasna Ahmed and I have had the privilege of being a Kumon Instructor since 2000.  The work is challenging and most satisfying.  It gives me the opportunity to touch children’s lives in a very meaningful and positive way.  Helping children achieve high grades and fulfilling their goals is the true reward of being an Instructor.

I was first introduced to Kumon by a friend who had seen the work in England.  We then set about contacting Kumon in Japan and finally Kumon was introduced in Kenya.  I was extremely impressed with the Kumon method as it is so effective and produces results.  I believe all parents would like to help their children but  find it challenging to do this on a continuous basis.  The unique worksheet-based Kumon study gives the children the ability to develop independence at a fairly early age. In my opinion, the more reliant our society becomes on gadgets, the more difficult it is for children to perform in school. Kumon’s pen and paper approach gives the children the opportunity to develop good study habits and work skills.  The Kumon method helps students to develop their ability at both numeracy and literacy. Students can then apply these skills to all their subjects and thereby improve in their overall performance.  Children these days are extremely busy and finding it increasingly difficult to find time to master their Maths and English study.  The 30 minutes per day per subject is an achievable goal.  Kumon lays down solid foundations for higher learning.

I find it hard to believe that I have been an Instructor for the past 15 years.  It is now a part of my life.  I have observed children grow in confidence and believe in themselves.   The decision to open a Centre and work with students came very easily for me.  Having run my own business for years I had the previous experience to develop a successful Kumon Centre. Encouraging children, setting their tasks and watching closely over them, has built very special bond between us.  Students come to the Centre waving their reports in ecstacy.  This is honestly the most precious gift that Kumon has given me.  Some students also contact us after they leave the Centre to tell us how they have possibly got into the University of their choice.  I am delighted to share this time with the students as they grow, physically and mentally.  My Centre has been a source of great joy for me and each time a parent recommends a friend or relative to Kumon is proof that we have done our job.

Frequently Asked Questions

As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.

Kumon offers much more than tutoring and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.

Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.

Both, and every child in between. This is because of our individualised approach to education, which always asks the question: "What is best for this individual child?" Following a diagnostic test, a study plan is set to develop the ability of the child and to progress them beyond the Kumon International Standard (an international approximation of their school level) regardless of their starting point. Kumon welcomes students with special educational needs, gifted and talented children, and all those who believe they can achieve more and fulfil their potential.
